Speech in Oslo, May 15, 1944: The Fatherland is in danger!

Speech at Universitetsplassen, Oslo, May 15, 1944.

By Vidkun Quisling.

North men!

The Fatherland is in danger!

In such circumstances, it is not sufficient to pursue a long-term policy and take time to help, trusting that when time comes, advice will come. It is necessary that we firmly and consistently implement our position.

As the Prime Minister temporarily exercising the King's authority under Norway's constitution, I therefore declare on behalf of the Norwegian people:

1. The overwhelming majority of the Norwegian people have always been opposed to communism. No responsible Norwegian wants Russian Bolshevik troops on Norwegian soil. We condemn the agreement which opens the door to the occupation of our country by the Red Army, and declare that we will oppose by all means a Bolshevik occupation of Norway or any part of it.

2. Furthermore, I declare that the emigrant board in London does not represent the Norwegian people and has no legal or moral right to conclude agreements on behalf of Norway.

The Norwegian who obeys orders or instructions from the former king and the former crown prince or from the émigré government and its organs is thereby guilty of treason against the fatherland and may be punished for war treason.

3. The situation further demands that all Norwegians now stand up for the joint national efforts to secure the fatherland and perform to the best of their ability in the fight against Bolshevism and in the work for Norway's revival.

Therefore, I declare that those Norwegians who henceforth oppose these efforts, or do not loyally cooperate, will have to take all the consequences for their anti-people and anti-state action. The Norwegian women and men, on the other hand, who honestly strive to promote the interests of our people in this fateful time, will, regardless of whether they are affiliated with our party or not, meet with full understanding and a sincere willingness to cooperate.

4. Norway's fate is now linked to the fate of Germany and Europe. But a basic condition for Europe's war efforts to lead to success and victory, and thus also Norway to be saved, is coordinated planning and management in the military, economic and political areas in Europe, and that each of Europe's united states achieves the war production that it is capable of and brings forward all the material resources and all the human material available.

Therefore, I declare that Norway will, in close cooperation with Germany, advocate with increased strength the organization and mobilization of all Europe's forces, and that we in Norway will put all our sources of aid into the joint struggle for Europe's security and future.

If Europe's power can be organized into a united effort, the outcome of this world battle will not be in doubt. Instead of succumbing to Bolshevism, the new Europe, a free, a hero, a powerful Europe with internal peace and cooperation will truly become the ruler of the world and the leader also in the coming world development.

Norwegians! With all our strength, we will advocate for Norway's cause, for the European freedom struggle and for Europe's solidarity and new order. This is, as conditions have developed, the only way to save Norway. It is also the only way to create a secure foundation for the national freedom and future of Norway and the Norwegian people.

Down with Bolshevism!

Down with all opposition from Norwegians to Norway's recovery!

Away with all lukewarmness and indifference towards the fate of the fatherland and the common good!

Long live Norway and our national freedom struggle!

Long live the United States of Europe and their victory over all invasion attempts!

Live the new Europe!
